Derek Peaple
Headteacher at Park House SchoolDerek is the Headteacher of Park House School in Newbury, a mixed 11-18 Converter Academy of 1150 students, former Daily Telegraph National Specialist Sports College of the Year and current NCCE Computing Education Hub School. Prior to his appointment to the Headship of Park House in 2003, Derek was the Headteacher of Woodcote High School in the London Borough of Croydon.
Derek has played a leading role in a wide range of regional, national and international education initiatives. His school's distinctive use of sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Values to build confidence in learning across the curriculum featured as a case study in the Demos Character Nation Report. In this context, Derek’s ‘values-driven ambition for students’ has been praised by Ofsted as a distinctive feature of his leadership.
As a result of the breadth of his work, Derek was recently shortlisted for
the Times Education Supplement National Headteacher of the Year Award.
Jon Arete
Director of School Improvement at Learning TrustPrior to joining Areté Learning Trust as Director of School Improvement and Deputy CEO in July 2020, Jon had worked in three different and diverse North East Schools for 20 years, with 15 of those being as a senior leader. Most recently as Deputy Headteacher and Director of Teaching School, Jon was responsible for the strategic leadership of teaching and learning, professional development, initial teacher training and external school to school support.
Jon is also an education author and speaker, having four books published on areas ranging from classroom pedagogy, educational research and school leadership; together with regularly speaking at national and international conferences about school improvement. Additionally, Jon has also been recognised by Microsoft as one of their Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts, showcasing how technology can pave the way to advances in student learning.
Jon regularly presents at teaching conferences both in the UK and internationally via Skype. This has included presentations to conferences in New York, Ohio and Dubai along with national conferences here in the UK. Jon also delivered a talk on the world famous TED stage in 2015, talking about ‘The Future of Learning’.
In 2012, Jon was selected to carry the Olympic Torch at the London 2012 Olympics. This honour came after he was nominated due to his work with young people, both in schools and through his sports coaching in the local community. Since carrying the torch, Jon has delivered lessons all over the world on the Olympic Torch, spreading the Olympic message via Skype to schools in 15 different states in America, as well as Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and France.
